Orthodontic Retainers Explained by
Orthodontist in Rockhampton and Emerald
If you are coming to the end of your orthodontic treatment there’s no doubt that you will be looking forward to casting off your braces or aligners for the very last time and enjoying your straighter smile.
However, many people are often surprised when told by their dentist they will then have to wear orthodontic retainers. Our Rockhampton and Emerald dentist explains…

Why We Need Orthodontic Retainers

In reality, orthodontic retainers are just as important as your braces or aligners in that they need to be worn to prevent your teeth from drifting back to how they were before. While braces and aligners do a great job of shifting teeth, they can and do have a tendency to relapse or drift back to their original starting positions particularly when there are large teeth movements involved.
For this reason, we ask all our orthodontic patients to wear orthodontic retainers in Emerald or Rockhampton for a period of time after completing their orthodontic treatment. Failure to do so may result in a complete relapse despite your (and our) best efforts. Retainers are worn for as long as it takes for the teeth to settle into their new position. Typically, as a rule of thumb, patients need to wear their retainer for a little longer than their braces treatment.

Types of Orthodontic Retainer

When it comes to orthodontic retainers, our Rockhampton and Emerald dental clinics provide three main types of retainer. All are custom made and comfortable to wear. They are as follows:

Removable orthodontic retainers

Hawley retainer –Consists of a clear plastic body that covers the roof of your mouth while clasps gently secure your retainer to your teeth. Wiring then helps to keep your teeth in perfect alignment.
Clear Essix retainers – These type of retainers are vacuum formed from clear plastic. They are generally thinner and therefore aren’t as durable. However, they are more easily removed.

Bonded retainers

These are attached directly to the inner side of the teeth making them a permanent fixture in the mouth.
